Michelle Birk, the 4-6th grade homeroom teacher, grew up in Alabama and graduated from Auburn University with a K- 8 elementary degree. She taught 4th and 5th grade in Alabama for 3 years. Then God drew her to Norfolk through an interest in Keystone and Christ is King Community Church nineteen years ago. Michelle is passionate about instilling the love of reading in her students. This passion is proven by the way her classroom is set up for reading: in the bathtub, in the loft, in the hammock chair, with flashlights, in forts, dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters, or coming dressed to the nines for a Golden Sower Award extravaganza. Always with a book in her hand, reading aloud, or finding what interests students, Michelle is on the hunt to help students over that hesitant reading hump. Additionally, she is a whiz with math and wants to make every student successful with this challenging subject. Michelle’s strength lies in her ability to design and execute creative projects to excite her students towards learning. Michelle demonstrates a fantastic example of a STEM classroom, blending science, technology, engineering and math across all disciplines.
